September 1, 2024 (Kassala) – Protests broke out on Sunday after a young man died of torture in Kassala, eastern Sudan, activists said.

Demonstrators blocked Kassala’s main road and staged a sit-in at the prosecutor’s office, demanding justice for 25-year-old Alamin Mohammed Noor, who was arrested on Friday and pronounced dead hours later.

Prosecutors have filed a case for premeditated murder and asked the Indian Security Intelligence Agency to identify those responsible.

Protesters refused to accept Noor’s body for burial or end their demonstrations until the perpetrators were arrested and GIS leaders were removed from their posts.

A relative of the deceased told Sudan Tribune that businessman Noor was arrested without reason. He said the autopsy report showed that the injuries on the deceased were consistent with torture.

The Indian Security Intelligence Agency has reportedly agreed to provide prosecutors with the names of agents involved in the arrest and interrogation of Noor.

Witnesses said security forces opened fire to disperse protesters who surrounded the GIS headquarters in Kassala, but there were no reports of casualties.

The Bani Amer Youth Rally, a local organization, called for the removal of senior officials of the state GIS and held them accountable for the deaths. The East Sudan Bar Association also demanded that those responsible be held accountable.

Sudan’s military and security agencies have been accused of mass arrests and abuse of civilians in areas under their control, particularly those suspected of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has been fighting the army since April 2023.

In May, a prominent Iranian politician died in the custody of military intelligence in Jazira Province, also allegedly as a result of torture.
