August 13, 2024 (Kassala) – Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday a surge in conjunctivitis cases in half of the country and an outbreak of cholera in three states as the rainy season exacerbated an already severe health crisis.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed 268 cases of cholera in Gezira, Khartoum and Kassala states, with 17 deaths. Conjunctivitis cases have reached 2,689 in nine states, mainly affecting displaced persons in White Nile, North Kordofan and North Kordofan.
Floods and heavy rains affected more than 26,000 people, killing 38 and injuring 265. More than 6,000 houses were completely destroyed and nearly 10,000 were partially damaged.
The ongoing conflict has severely disrupted health services, leaving many vulnerable to disease outbreaks. The Ministry of Health is working to distribute chlorine and implement hygiene measures, but challenges remain.
Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim chaired an emergency meeting in Kassala to respond to the crisis, stressing the need to coordinate efforts with other agencies to mitigate the impact of the rainy season.
The Treasury has allocated £1 billion to the Department of Health to scale up interventions in affected states, including the provision of intravenous fluids and vector control equipment.
The situation highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a solution to the conflict, which has devastated Sudan’s health system and put millions of people at risk.
