The number of thunderstorms that hit Finland last weekend was unusually high for this time of year.

Unusually severe thunderstorms hit Finland over the weekend, with more than 21,000 lightning strikes recorded on Sunday alone, and 14,000 on Saturday.

The average number of strikes in June is usually around 25,000.

Thunderstorms over the weekend caused chaos across the country, including flash flooding in the town center of Sotkamo, Kainuu region.

Thunderstorms were three times more frequent than average in May. Setting a new record The previous record for so-called “heatwave” days, when temperatures broke the 25-degree Celsius mark, was set in 2018, when 14 of those days broke that threshold.

“The humidity and heat in late May are certainly responsible for the thunderstorms we saw over the weekend,” said meteorologist Yle Anne Bergstrom explain.

According to the forecast, temperatures in Finland will continue to be several degrees above average this week.

A rain front will move westwards across Finland late Monday night, bringing heavy rain to Lapland on Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely in northern and central Finland. Elsewhere, the weather will remain clear.

The remaining thunderstorms will turn into isolated showers by Wednesday. The weather will continue to be mainly sunny and warm across the country.

Dry weather prevailed across the country as thunderstorms have been localized so far and rainfall was below average for May.

Borgstrom said the high temperatures will ease this weekend, but the weather is expected to become more unsettled with an increased chance of prolonged rain.
