Two primary schools in St James achieved excellent results in this year’s Year 6 Primary School Exam (PEP) held recently.
Corinaldi Avenue Primary School in Montego Bay once again achieved impressive results with 168 students achieving above 300 out of 400 in their examinations.
The school’s principal, Deon Stern-Anglin, told JIS News that a total of 218 students sat for the exam.
“About 75 students scored over 340 and 91 per cent passed the first stage, which means these students are ready for high school. Last year, it was 80 per cent, so this year it’s an 11 per cent increase,” Ms Stern-Anglin said.
She added that the school’s highest exam score this year was 393.1, achieved by the school’s top girl, Desandra Clarke.
However, she noted that maths results had dropped slightly this year and the school was looking at how to improve next time.
Corinaldi Avenue Primary School remains one of the highest performing primary schools in the parish and has entry qualifications to several traditional high schools across the island.
Montego Bay Girls’ High School had 26 students pass the exam, Herbert Morrison Technical High School had 29 students pass the exam, Cornwall College had 13 students pass the exam, Mount Alvernia Girls’ High School had 11 students pass the exam, Westwood High School had four students pass the exam, Munro College had three students pass the exam, Hampton School had one student pass the exam, Arden High School had one student pass the exam, and St Hilda’s Parish High School had three students pass the exam.
There were 12 students who were successfully admitted, including 7 from Rusea’s High, 7 from William Knibb Memorial High, 1 from Edwin Allen High, 1 from Kingston Technical High, 35 from St. James High, 35 from Irwin High, 8 from Anchovy High, 1 from Muschette High, 2 from Spot Valley High, 14 from Green Pond High, 10 from Maldon High, and 1 from Hopewell High.
Meanwhile, Adelphi Primary School principal Marlon Campbell told JIS News that the school’s PEP was performing well compared to last year.
“They have done very well this year. Our scores were a little higher than last year and most students got into their first choice. This year’s batch has done very well in most areas as our top five students all had very high scores,” he pointed out.
About 16 students are taking the exam at the school this year, two more than before.
There were two passes for Montego Bay Girls’ High School, one pass for Mount Alvernia Girls’ High School, one pass for Cornwall College, one pass for William Knibb High School, eight passes for St James High School, and three passes for Moosecutt High School.
Mr Campbell noted that the students were doing well, although there was still room for improvement.
Kelcia Burke, the school’s top student, scored 377 out of 400 on the test, an average of 94 percent.
“All the other top students had an average of 80. So I am very happy with their performance and also with the excellent performance of my staff from grades four to six. The whole team performed very well,” he pointed out.
