Apia, Samoa – June 28, 2024 – 13 million tala is reportedly missing from the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) microfinance institution and the general manager has been fired.
The managing director is the first woman to hold the top position in the SPBD network and has worked in various agencies and regional organizations, having been with the company for more than 15 years.
Sources revealed history SPBD founder Greg Casagrande met with staff in Apia last week before flying to Fiji to open the new SPBD branch and is expected to return to Samoa this week in light of the latest developments.
Sources also said that following the departure of the general manager last week, the finance manager and other key department personnel also resigned.
SPBD praised for supporting women
SPBD is a microfinance institution that has been providing loans to grassroots women and others to develop small businesses for the past 24 years and holds an annual event to recognize and celebrate success stories.
Samoa was the first country to establish an SPBD to provide microcredit to women to develop microenterprises.
According to its website, SPBD teams are located in nearly every village in Samoa and have been financially sustainable since 2007. SPBD currently serves nearly 20,000 families in Samoa, nearly 60 percent of the total number of households.
