A The Barbadian is one of five candidates from the region who recently received full scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in soil science at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus (Trinidad).
The winner from Barbados is Michelle Wilson-Howard, Senior Agricultural Assistant at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security. Other winners are from Guyana, Belize, Haiti and Saint Lucia.
The scholarship opportunity is launched with the support of the Caribbean Small Island Developing States Multi-Country Soil Management Initiative for Integrated Landscape Restoration and Sustainable Food Systems (CSIDS SOILCARE) – Phase I project. This regional project aims to strengthen soil management in CSIDS.
Dr. Ronan Francis, regional land specialist for the Sustainable Land Management Partnership Initiative, revealed that a total of 20 applicants from the eight countries participating in the first phase of the project (Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia) competed for the scholarships.
Dr Francis said: “For those who do not yet have a master’s degree, the five winners will begin their studies with an MPhil; for those who already have a master’s degree, they may only need to complete the prerequisites and then proceed directly to doctoral studies.”
“Some of the scholarship recipients will study composting, others will study soil physics, chemistry, soil fertility and watershed management, but these courses are all within the Faculty of Food and Agriculture. This is a fantastic opportunity for the five lucky candidates.”
