In a letter to his counterpart Pham Minh Chinh on July 20, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong noted that Trong had served in the party for decades, including 13 years as general secretary, and had made significant contributions to Vietnam’s rapid economic growth and improvements in people’s lives.

“As general secretary, he attached importance to party building and worked to eradicate corruption, providing important directions for the reform and strengthening of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the country,” he said.

Joshua Wong said that Nguyen Phu Trong is also a close friend of Singapore. Nguyen Phu Trong visited Singapore in September 2012, which led to the establishment of a strategic partnership between Singapore and Vietnam the following year.

“Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time,” Mr Huang said.

Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan also paid tribute to Trong, noting that under his leadership, Vietnam had not only developed into a regional economic powerhouse but also a “skilled diplomatic actor”.
