The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has signed an agreement with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO).
The agreement aims to strengthen tourism cooperation between Sri Lanka and India, establish closer tourism ties and promote common development.
Under the agreement, the two sides will promote bilateral tourism through joint marketing initiatives, share best practices to improve service standards and operational efficiency, jointly organize events, roadshows and expositions, and promote mutually beneficial sustainable tourism practices.
India was Sri Lanka’s largest tourist destination last year. However, the number of tourists from the country has fallen sharply this year. The incident came after several deputy government ministers made insulting remarks about India and its prime minister.
Following this, a campaign was launched calling on Indians to stop going to Sri Lanka for holidays and go to the Indian-controlled island of Lakshadweep.
The government-owned Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion and Marketing Board said it would work to increase the number of Indian tourists.
