Villagers described the crematorium planned to be built on the outskirts of Shiragali as a death factory and accused the Panevėžys regional authorities of not taking steps to move such a building to somewhere in the forest.
The district mayor, who used to be a construction engineer, stressed that neither he nor the district council had the power to move planned construction objects.
Strangely for the builders of the crematorium, the residents of Silagali who tried to influence the politicians never gained traction with them.
Request for defense
The construction company “JK Ranga”, operating in Panevěž, announced as early as the summer of 2022 that they intend to build a crematorium between the Šilagali and Šilaičiai cemeteries, near the Via Baltica road.
If the builders’ plans had come to fruition, the crematorium would be operational by now.
However, the building still does not exist, with its creators still processing paperwork for its future construction.
Residents of Shilagarh who see the threat near the crematorium continue to look for ways to prevent it.
Till date, people of the village used to make personal requests to the district authorities to take action against such structures.
However, a month ago, Shilagal residents collected 260 protest signatures and handed them over to the mayor.
It also requires that the signed protest be submitted to all members of the Security Council.
Fear of smoke
Recently, a large group of Silagali residents descended on the SAR government, demanding that Mayor Antanas Posius explain to them what the authorities are doing to protect them from the crematorium.
“There were so many of us that the mayor even apologized and said he had no place to put us. But that’s OK, we fit in,” said Jolanda Bukauskienė, who opposes the crematorium.
In the letter to the government, whose signatures fill almost all 19 pages, there is no reason given as to why the people of Shilagarh do not want the crematorium. It simply states that the signatories do not agree with this explanation.
However, according to J. Bukauskienė, when they came to the mayor, the people explained that although the crematorium would not be located in the village, but rather at a distance from the village, the prevailing south-westerly winds here would bring the smoke from the crematorium to the houses of the Shiragal people.
“We will breathe mercury and nitrogen”, J. Bukauskienė has no doubts.
Makes the mayor laugh
“We blame the mayor, saying that the government cares more about business than about us, the peace and well-being of the residents of the region, and finally our health. For example, we told the authorities that the crematorium could be located in the Ramigala Free Economic Zone, where a lot of money has been invested, but nothing happened,” said J. Bukauskienė.
She said she noticed the mayor smiled when she heard the suggestion that the crematorium should be located at Ramgara.
The people of Shilagarh understand the laughter of the district manager, A. Pocius who lives in a suburban village of Ramigala does not want such a facility near his home.
“Unfortunately, none of the members of the Panevėžys District Council live in Silagali, so there are no defenders of our village,” lamented J. Bukauskienė.
The people of Šilagali have no doubt that the value of real estate will fall due to the location of the crematorium in the village. According to opponents of the construction, experts have calculated that house prices in Šilagali are at risk of falling by up to 30%.

There is no future for the hive
Rimantas Auškalnis from Silagara regrets that after the crematorium is built, he will have to destroy the beehives that he and his father kept near such objects.
“Surely no one wants to buy honey brought near the crematorium,” R. Auškalnis has no doubts.
A resident of the same village, E. Simokaitis, complained that he would have to inhale particles of burnt bodies once the crematorium started operating.
“Couldn’t you build that crematorium somewhere in the forest? Why was it built on the Šilagali side?” – asked E. Simokaitis.
No threats seen
Mayor A. Pocius confirmed that he received a large delegation from Šilagali after hearing what the visitors said about the planned crematorium.
“I really do not have any authority to ask businessmen to build crematoriums outside the plots they own. Especially since the crematoriums were built with all the permits and would not violate state laws,” the mayor gave his answer to those who expressed their demands.
A. Pocius, who studied architecture in his youth, claimed that he did not consider the crematorium a threat to Šilagalii.
“I remember the chaos when gas stations began to be built near residential houses in Panevėžys and all over Lithuania. How much passion people put into it, fearing that gas stations would explode and fly into the air. Now I hear that people who live near gas stations are satisfied, because they can fill up their tanks just by driving a dozen or a few dozen meters,” says A. Pocius.
The district chief added that the crematorium is much safer than any gas station or any other factory. The mayor said the crematorium will not explode, emit odors or toxic substances.
A. Pocius also explained that the signatures of 260 Shilagal citizens were presented to the members of the District Council. However, the Council did not consider this issue because, according to the Mayor, politicians do not have the ability to influence the construction of the crematorium in any way. This will be explained in writing to the author of this appeal.

Builders do not change plans
Rasa Zeniauskienė, project manager of JK Ranga, the company in charge of the crematorium construction, said the company’s management knew that the people of Shiragar were trying to put pressure on politicians and were surprised by the villagers’ actions.
R. Zeniauskienė stressed: “It is true that politicians cannot prohibit what is done in accordance with the procedure established by law.”
According to the project manager, the detailed planning revision of the area has been completed and will be submitted for approval soon. According to the “JK Ranga representative”, construction can then begin. Their exact origin has not yet been named.
R. Zeniauskienė was surprised that the residents of Shilagal attacked the mayor over the crematorium issue but did not raise the issue with the crematorium’s builders themselves.
“We know that the people of Silagali expressed strong emotions about the construction of the crematorium when organizing meetings. But for some reason we were not invited to these events”, asserts R. Zeniauskienė.
