It was learnt that villagers of Chipolonga village in Machinga District are accusing officials of the National Registration Department, Chipolonga Ground, of demanding a fee of K500 to be registered in the National Identity Card cleansing exercise being carried out by the department in the area.

Registration process.

According to Chipolonga, the group’s village chief, an official at the centre allegedly asked them to pay 500 kyats each for fuel, to which the villagers protested and returned home, while others headed to the Nampeya registration centre.

Dailes Chitela, a villager, confirmed the news in an interview and said that the registration work at the center was suspended prematurely on Sunday due to this news, so he called on the authorities to resolve the matter quickly.

However, when contacted, the NRB Regional Officer for Machinga District, Howard Sosola, while acknowledging the development, said the decision did not come from his office but from the local registration officer.

Sosola also denied claims that the centre’s operations were suspended on Sunday because the community refused to pay the amount demanded.

NRB spokesman Norman Fulatira was not immediately available for comment.
