Sheep and goat plague: Tsiaras asks EU to compensate farmers

In the letter, the Greek minister pointed out that from the first moment of the outbreak, our country not only implemented everything provided for in Regulation 687/2020, but also took additional strict measures to limit and eradicate the disease.

As Mr. Tsiaras pointed out, this issue concerns many Member States and threatens to have significant financial implications for the entire European Union. Invoking the principle of solidarity, he stressed that “this common challenge requires a coordinated and effective response. We must coordinate our efforts to protect and support livestock and ensure their sustainability and resilience.”

“Given the severe economic impact of the pandemic on our livestock farmers, compensatory measures must be put in place to support those affected,” Mr Tsiaras stressed in the letter.

In order to combat the economic impact of PPR, the Greek minister suggested: “Given the severe economic impact of this outbreak on our livestock farmers, compensatory measures must be introduced to support those affected. Livestock farmers are at the forefront of this battle, having already suffered heavy losses due to other crises such as the severe flooding in Greece and further burdened by the ongoing crisis in all Member States. It is therefore imperative to provide financial assistance, not only by providing farmers with the highest possible compensation per animal lost, but also by compensating them for their lost income.”
