On Monday morning, Upper Austria intensified its search for an 81-year-old missing person in the Dachstein region, believed to be Viennese author Bodo Hell. Witnesses last saw him around 11 a.m. on Friday. He told hikers he wanted to look for his cattle in the high mountain region between Grafenbergalm and Heilbronnakreuz. The Upper Austrian police reported that there has been no sign of him since then.
The Obertraun Mountain Rescue Service announced on Monday morning that the missing person’s mobile phone had not been contactable since Friday and that the “famous shepherd and writer” had never reached his destination. Emergency services were alerted after he could not be found in his hut on Sunday. In addition to the Upper Austrian Mountain Rescue Service and the mountain rescue center of the community of Dachstein in Styria, helicopters from the Salzburg and Graz police and armed forces were also involved in the operation on Sunday until nightfall.
Emergency services searching difficult terrain
The search has been going on again since Monday morning. More than 30 mountain rescuers from Obertraun and Hallstatt are searching the area together with the Executive Alpine Team and several search dogs. The mountain rescue team said that the locals know the Dachstein Krippenstein area very well and therefore “often take lesser-known roads, which makes the search more difficult”.
Hakata Hell wins literature award
Hell was awarded the Styrian State Literature Prize this year. The Salzburg native spends his summers in an alpine hut in Grafenbergalm, where he not only takes care of around a hundred animals but also writes books.
