A Saudi man sentenced to death for drug trafficking and a Pakistani man were executed in Saudi Arabia today, bringing the number of executions since the beginning of the year to 106, according to an AFP tally based on reports from the Riyadh Interior Ministry.
Saudi authorities resumed executing drug traffickers sentenced to death at the end of 2022 after a hiatus of nearly three years.
So far this year, seven traffickers have been executed, bringing the number of executions to 170 in 2023, including 33 for terrorism-related crimes.
On Monday, the Berlin-based European-Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR), which campaigns for the abolition of the death penalty, condemned the fact that Saudi Arabia carries out “an execution almost every two days”.
“The 100 executions in 196 days demonstrates that the Saudi Arabian government persists in frequently resorting to the death penalty, in violation of international law and its official commitments,” the NGO stressed in a press release.
According to ESOHR and AFP, those executed this year include 78 Saudis, eight Yemenis, five Ethiopians, seven Pakistanis, three Syrians, one Sri Lankan, one Nigerian, one Jordanian, one Indian and one Sudanese.
Two of them were women.
Authorities argued that the executions were in accordance with Islamic law and necessary to “maintain public order.”
