In 2021, the average full-time equivalent (FTE) net income for private sector employees in France was €2,524/month. Employees working in key functional areas receive the highest salaries, especially when they work in a central location rather than in a commuting zone. Outside of functional areas, the average salary is €2,044/month.
Regional wage differences reflect, in part, the situation of local employees and the companies that employ them. But even when characteristics are the same, differences still exist. For example, salaried managers and company directors in central Paris earn about 35% more than those in functional areas with a population of more than 700,000.
Between 2000 and 2021, jobs, including the highest paying ones, became increasingly concentrated in regions with a population of more than 700,000 (excluding Paris). The Paris regional centre, which has seen a decline in its weight in total employment in metropolitan France (-1 percentage point), concentrates both very high wages (two-thirds of the top 1% of wages in 2021) and low wages.
