The Moselle village has celebrated its annual harvest festival for 40 years, honouring Luxembourg’s ancient tradition of blessing plants during their flowering season.
In 1984, some locals in Greveldange decided to hold a special festival on Ascension Day to honour a Luxembourgish tradition that had existed since the 17th century. A year later, the first “Léiffrawëschdag” was born, taking place in the streets around the church of the Moselle village.
The residents of Greveldange create bouquets of locally produced flowers and herbs with which they decorate the village. Tradition dictates that these bouquets (called “Wësch”) be taken to the church along with bread and wine to be blessed. According to ancient beliefs, this in turn will bring good luck to the farmers, ensure a good harvest, and protect farm animals from disease.
The tradition declined until the 1980s due to a decline in the number of local farmers, but since its revival the festival has grown in popularity, attracting between 5,000 and 7,000 visitors each year. Bouquets are now sold to raise money for local charities.
