The South Korean Football Association has formally lodged a complaint with FIFA over racist comments made by Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan, despite the Italian club Como denying the allegation.
An unnamed Como player was accused of referring to Henry Hwang as “Jackie Chan,” a Hong Kong movie star best known for his martial arts films, during a pre-season game in Spain on Monday.
On Tuesday, Como insisted its players “did not make any derogatory comments” and that “the reaction of some Wolves players suggests the incident has been blown out of proportion”.
The Korea Football Association said it sent a formal letter to FIFA on Thursday expressing “serious concern about the racist behaviour suffered by Hwang Hee-chan”.
The letter calls on FIFA to take action to “eliminate racism from football”, FIFA said on its official X account on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Huang said on Instagram that the coaching staff and teammates said they would leave the court with him “if needed” following the alleged abuse.
He added: “Racism will not be tolerated, in sport or in any aspect of life.” His post received more than 143,500 likes.
According to Cuomo, an unnamed player on the team said “Don’t bother with him, he thinks he’s Jackie Chan.”
The Italian club insisted the remark was “directed at the player’s name and the constant mention of ‘Channy’ by his team-mates on the pitch”.
Wolves head coach Gary O’Neill said Hwang Hee-chan has the full support of all Wolves players.
Hwang Hee-chan is not the first South Korean player to face racial abuse in a European league.
In 2021, eight men were arrested across England and Wales for allegedly making racist comments about Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min on Twitter.
Son Heung-min said in 2022 that he faced “unimaginable” racism as a teenage footballer in Germany and was delighted to get “revenge” when South Korea eliminated Germany at the 2018 World Cup.
