You’ll experience the hypnotic sounds of Tinariwen live at den Atelier on Thursday 22nd August, don’t miss your chance to win tickets to this unforgettable evening of desert blues through Radio Today.
The story of Tinariwen begins with that of its founder, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, the son of a Tuareg rebel who, at the age of four, witnessed the execution of his father by the government during the 1963 uprising in Mali.
Growing up in the Algerian desert and refugee camps, Ibrahim was seen as a wanderer and a loner, and his nickname was “Abaraybone”, which means “ragged child”.
He remembers watching a western one day in a makeshift desert movie theater and being struck by a scene in which a cowboy played a song on his guitar.
Inspired, he built his first guitar out of oil cans, sticks and bicycle brake cables, and began learning to play, practicing ancient Tuareg melodies, modern Arabic pop and the Malian blues of Ali Farka Touré.
Tuareg nomads and cowboy wanderers. Camel caravans and wild horses. The eternal horizon of the endless Sahara and the wild frontier of the Old West – at the end of the day, people gathered around campfires playing guitar and singing songs of loss and longing and “coming home to the ranch”.
Tinariwen is a Tuareg music band formed on the border of Mali and Algeria in 1979. Pioneers of the assouf style (which means “nostalgia” in the Tamashq language), their songs express the concerns of the Tuareg people by fusing traditional West African and Arabic music with blues, folk, and other influences.
