This year’s winners were awarded the European Prize for Culture on Friday evening.

This weekend, Europe was in the spotlight not only politically, but also culturally! Last Friday evening, at the Luxembourg Philharmonic Hall, the European Culture Prize was awarded for the first time in Luxembourg to 11 people, in front of a huge audience: the hall was completely sold out.

It was a grand event with many notable figures in attendance, including a performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra with Ronan Keating and a performance by TALI. One of the winners was former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who was honoured for his contribution to European integration.

In addition, Grand Duchess Maria Theresa was recognized for her social involvement. She was visibly moved when accepting the award and dedicated it to “(…) those who can neither hear nor see, like the millions of girls and women in Afghanistan”.

Another moving moment was when Frank Elstner’s youngest daughter, Enja, took over the eulogy from her father. In her speech, she thanked her father for always putting his family as much as his career. The German television legend was awarded the European Prize for Culture for his life’s work. He began his career 60 years ago at Radio Luxembourg in the Villa Louvigny in Luxembourg and later became a popular presenter and television producer, inventing, for example, “Wetten Dass…?”

Many other celebrities were honoured, and the Philharmonic Orchestra, whose members represent 25 different countries, was awarded the European Cultural Prize.

Next week, Magazine will feature another more extensive documentary about the European Culture Prize and will publish a personal interview with Frank Elstner.
