Gareth Southgate said on Sunday he does not feel ready to be eliminated from Euro 2024 after Jude Bellingham’s heroics helped his side to a narrow win.

England were on the brink of an embarrassing last-16 exit after trailing Slovakia by a goal in Gelsenkirchen, but Bellingham saved Southgate and his team-mates with a brilliant overhead kick in the dying seconds.

Harry Kane then scored with a trademark header early in extra time to give a below-par England side a hard-fought win.

“We knew a goal would change the whole atmosphere of the stadium. I was sure we could score, but I didn’t expect it to be so late,” Southgate told reporters.

“I wasn’t ready that night, I wasn’t ready to go home and obviously the players felt the same way.”

Southgate praised Kane and Bellingham, who combined to score all four of England’s goals as they won the game despite showing clear signs of fatigue.

Southgate added: “With 15 minutes left they had two players taken off because they were not fit enough.

“But that’s what they’re capable of, and that’s why we stick with them.”

England will face Switzerland in Düsseldorf next weekend after coming from behind to win their quarter-final on Sunday.
