The French Football Federation (FFF) said on Tuesday it planned to file a complaint with FIFA and take legal action over racist chants by members of Argentina’s Copa America-winning team.

French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo “condemned in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist and discriminatory statements directed at players of the French team”.

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted a live video from the team bus following Chelsea’s win over Colombia in the Copa Sudamericana in Miami on Sunday and shared it on social media.

Some players, including Fernandez, sang the song from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup final victory over France.

The song was directed at France star striker Kylian Mbappe and contained homophobic slurs.

“These shocking statements are a serious violation of the values of sport and human rights, and the president of the Argentine Football Federation has decided to directly challenge his Argentine counterparts and FIFA and initiate legal proceedings against racist and discriminatory statements,” the Argentine Football Federation said in a statement.

Fernandes’ Chelsea team-mate Wesley Fofana criticised the video on social media.

The French international said on X (formerly Twitter): “Football in 2024: no more racist complexes”.

French Sports Minister Amelie Houdea-Castra also called on world football’s governing body FIFA to take action.

“So sad. It’s even more unacceptable when this behavior happens over and over again,” Oudea-Castera wrote on X.

“FIFA: Any response?” she added.

Argentina and France have maintained a fierce rivalry since the South American side was eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual champions France at the 2018 World Cup.

Two years ago, the FFF also lodged a complaint about racist comments on social media.
