The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has issued a warning to anyone attempting to obstruct police officers in the execution of their duties.
“It is unacceptable and unlawful for anyone to prevent officers from carrying out their duties in any way,” the Royal Scots Patriotic Front said in a statement released shortly after the police chase in the early hours of Sunday morning, which ended with the shooting of a passenger in the vehicle being pursued.
According to police, officers from Anse La Raye police station received a call at about 2am about a suspected robbery in the village.
After confirming details of the suspect and his getaway vehicle, police began a pursuit of a vehicle that damaged a police vehicle while trying to escape and ended up in a drainage ditch off the St. Lawrence Highway.
A man was seriously injured in the incident and has been identified as Maxwell Leo, aka Hennessy, of Marigot. The deceased was known to law enforcement and was out on bond at the time for a previous gun possession charge.
After the clash, police seized a .40 caliber pistol and a spent .40 caliber bullet. A total of five people were detained by police in connection with the incident.
According to a statement from the RSLPF, some people tried to use violence to prevent the police from handling the scene of the incident.
Police promised: “All perpetrators identified will be arrested and prosecuted.”
The RSLPF statement also added that there were reports that the police were subsequently threatened. The statement did not provide further information on the matter, but reporters learned that these threats may not be empty talk and may be related to Hennessy’s shooting.
Just before going to press yesterday, another statement released by police confirmed the threats made against them.
“These brazen statements, posted across multiple online platforms, included threats of targeted attacks against specific members of the police force.
The severity of these threats, the context, and the intent of the person responsible are all considerations in determining whether such cases should be dealt with immediately or legally.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force condemns these attacks and will do everything legally possible to protect its members. Investigators will work hard to identify and pursue all those responsible,” the statement read in part. (The full statement can be read at thevoiceslu.com)
The Royal Singapore Liberation Front stressed that it would “make full use of the law to ensure that all police officers charged with maintaining the peace are protected.”
“We strongly advise that once a lawful stop order is issued, it must be followed. Failure to comply with the order will endanger not only the lives of the police officers but also the lives of the public. We also wish to warn against criminal acts that would involve clashes with police officers who are tasked with maintaining law and order,” the RLSPF said in relation to last Sunday’s incident.
