“My dream is to transform this team and not worry too much about numbers and results and make sure we create an environment where people can feel free to go out and play without overthinking,” Rohit said after being named Men’s International Cricketer of the Year at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards.
“That’s what I needed. My three pillars helped me a lot and they are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and) Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee,” he said.
He said: “What I do is important to me, but I also have to remember the players who came in at different points in time and helped the team achieve what it has.”
Rohit said the feeling of winning the World Cup was indescribable, ending India’s decade-long absence from the global tournament.
“(It was a) feeling you don’t have every day. It’s something we really wanted. When we won the World Cup, we all enjoyed the moment, we played really well and were grateful to our country for celebrating with us,” he said.
“It means a lot to us and it means a lot to the country. It feels really good to bring the trophy back home and celebrate with everyone here. “(It’s a) great feeling that can’t be expressed in words. I feel like it’s a feeling that can’t be expressed in words. It doesn’t express how we felt when this happened,” Rohit said.
The Mumbai native said he is not one to be fussy about the specific weight of a racket and prefers to choose a racket based on how it feels.
“The guys who spent time with me in the locker room where I had stickers on and bat tape on and everything, they’ll tell you that no matter which bat I picked up, I was going to hit with that bat,” he said.
“For me, the balance of the bat is very important. I have seen a lot of people who only care about ‘how much grain is in the bat’, ‘how heavy is the bat’ and ‘how does it look from the outside’, but I am not that kind of person. I will pick up the bat and if I feel it is the right bat, I will hit with it,” he said.
Despite leading Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles as captain, Rohit is still hungry for more trophies for himself.
“There is a reason why I won five IPL trophies. I will not stop because once you have tasted winning matches, winning cups, you don’t stop and we will keep working as a team. We will keep working for better results in the future,” he said.
Besides, he also hopes to lead India to greater success as the country’s ODI and Test leader.
“We have some great tournaments coming up that are very challenging. For us it never ends. Once you achieve something you always want to achieve more.
“That’s what I will do. I’m pretty sure my teammates will think the same. I have seen very exciting and brilliant Indian cricket over the last two years,” he added.
