PARIS, France — Jamaican Roger Stoner had just stunned the world and made history by winning the men’s discus throw at the 2024 Paris Olympics at the Stade de France, breaking the Olympic record by 70 meters.
Stoner was one of three Jamaicans to advance to the 12-man final, beating Lithuanian Mykolas Alekner with 69.97m. Austrian Matthew Denny finished third with 69.31m.
Coincidentally, Alekna had already set a new Olympic record with 69.97 meters, a short-lived record that was only broken by Stoner’s heroic efforts.
Ralsford Mullings finished ninth with 65.61m and Jamaican Traves Smikle finished tenth with 64.97m.
Stoner won Jamaica’s first gold medal in the event, bringing the country’s total to five, including an unprecedented four in field events. Stoner is coached by three-time Olympic shot put champion Ryan Krauser, who also specializes in the discus.
