Forecasters monitor tropical wave near eastern Caribbean Sea

According to the latest update from the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), forecasters are closely monitoring three tropical waves in the Atlantic basin.

The National Hurricane Center highlighted a tropical wave several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles in its 8 a.m. advisory. Shower activity associated with this disturbance has remained virtually unchanged in organization since yesterday.

While development may be slow, the system is forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles on Monday. The wave is expected to move through the central and western Caribbean Sea later this week, where conditions may become more favorable for development, potentially leading to the formation of a tropical depression.

Whether or not the system develops further, it could bring gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall to parts of the Lesser Antilles on Monday. The National Hurricane Center gives this disturbance a low probability (10%) of forming within the next 48 hours and a moderate probability (40%) of forming within the next 7 days.

In the eastern tropical Atlantic, another tropical wave currently over West Africa is expected to move offshore on Monday. As this system moves slowly west-northwestward over the eastern tropical Atlantic, environmental conditions are likely to support its slow development throughout the week. The National Hurricane Center assesses that this disturbance has a low probability of forming within the next 48 hours (near 0%) and a low probability of forming within the next 7 days (20%).

Meanwhile, in the northwest Gulf of Mexico, a large area of ​​low pressure off the coast of Upper Texas continues to produce showers and thunderstorms along and offshore the Texas and Louisiana coasts. The system is expected to linger near the coast over the next few days and could develop slowly if it remains offshore.

Regardless of further development, heavy rainfall from this disturbance could cause flash flooding in parts of coastal Louisiana and the north Texas coast over the next few days. The National Hurricane Center has determined that this system has a low (10%) chance of forming within the next 48 hours and a low (20%) chance of forming within the next 7 days.
