A rocket engine test failed. No one was injured in the incident.
A rocket engine exploded at a test site at the Scottish Space Centre on Monday. Video footage showed huge flames first coming from the base of the rocket, and moments later the entire structure was on fire.
The accident occurred at the Saxosphere Centre in Shetland. The test was carried out by a German company Augsburg Rocket Factory (RFA), which aims to send the first British rocket into orbit.
According to RFA, the “deviation” caused a “phase loss”. No one was injured in the incident. A statement from the space center said safety protocols were fully followed and the area was evacuated before the test.
This is a test of nine rocket engines and should be carried out before the official launch.
– The space center announced that this was a test, the purpose of which was to detect problems before taking the next step.
– We are working with the RFA to understand the causes and learn from them.
Three months ago, the first rocket test was successfully carried out at the same location.
In 2023, the Sachswald Space Center received permission from the aviation authorities to start launching rockets into Earth orbit. It aims to become the first space center in Western Europe capable of sending launch vehicles into orbit.
