The recent Soca Monarch competition was absolutely thrilling!
On Saturday, July 6 at the Suboviji, Ricky T’s passionate and raw rendition of “Look Something to Talk About” was truly a sight to behold, while Sly’s rendition of “Damn Proud Lucian” was also outstanding, far outdoing the other competitors.
The enthusiasm of the audience was incredible and the support for the artists was inspiring. It was clear that the Soca Monarch competition was an event not to be missed, with fierce, intense and lively performances.
We can’t wait to see what the next year brings!
The event was a huge success with great crowd enthusiasm and support, and the winners each received a prize of $40,000.
Ricky T, aka “The Teasel,” and his crew dressed in baggy costumes and performed in J’ouvert mode, jumping and prancing to a fiery tune.
Ezra D’Funmachine took second place with “BeYoutiful,” continuing his sassy, fun, “beat-hopping” performance. Bronxx, Matta and Ricky T took third place with “Better Than Them,” and defending champion Imran Nerdy took fourth place with “Start Di Party.”
Sly put in a stellar performance with his popular “Damn Proud Lucian”, outdoing 6-time Groovy Soca Award-winning monarch Arthur Alan. Although “King Arthur” was eventually dethroned, he still put in a strong performance with another uptempo song “Seven Times”.
Ricky T was second with “Its not Your Turn” and Imran Nerdy was third with “Money”.
In an interview with The Voice following the show, Ricky T spoke candidly about his new status as Power Soca champion and the energy that continues to drive his performances, fueled by his massive fan base and support, which he described as “huge, massive, all over the world.”
As for incorporating more youthful energy into his skits and speeches, Ricky T said: “The journey is great, everything is good, but you can’t die with talent.”
“The talent is there … (and) we have to share that talent with the younger generation,” he added. “It’s generation after generation, so we have to keep doing what we’re doing and keep doing it the best we can.”
Talking about his preparation for the show and the cast that accompanied him, he said: “It’s all talent… This is Mardi Gras, so we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing. Playing great music, making Mardi Gras sweeter and better, elevating the atmosphere.”
“It was a great night of Soca music, starting with the Groovy (segment)… The audience was very satisfied,” said Claude Paul, a representative of the Carnival Planning and Management Committee (CPMC).
With the increased prize money ($40,000) for winners in each singing category, as an added incentive, Paul said, “The total prize money for the three competitions adds up to $500,000… That’s government money for the industry.
“The support and response from the audience reminded me of my performance at MPP… I felt that overall it was a great night of calypso, soca and our music.”
