San Francisco 49ers Rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall wasn’t the only person shot during Saturday’s Union Square robbery.
Authorities said the attempted robbery backfired because during a struggle with Pierstle, who refused to surrender, the 17-year-old suspect was shot with a bullet from his own gun.
‘[Pearsall] “They didn’t do anything,” one sheriff, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Board of Supervisors Chairman Aaron Peskin, who relayed the message to reporters.
Police said the suspect suffered injuries to his hand or arm and is currently being treated at San Francisco General Hospital in stable condition pending final charges. Piercell suffered chest injuries and is currently being treated at the same hospital in serious but stable condition.
There is no indication that Piercell was targeted for the robbery because of his NFL status. KTXL’s Sean Cunningham reports that police said the robbers were after Piercell’s Rolex watch, but Police Chief Bill Scott declined to confirm what the suspects were trying to steal.
In the video, shot from across the street, Piercell moves slowly. He does not appear to be in excessive pain.

The team said in a statement that Piercell “suffered from a gunshot wound to the chest and is in serious but stable condition.”
Police released a statement late Saturday night describing the incident.
“On August 31, 2024 at approximately 3:37 p.m., San Francisco police officers responded to the area of Geary Street and Grant Avenue on reports of a shooting,” reads the statement received by DailyMail.com. “Upon arrival, officers found two males injured. Officers rendered first aid and paramedics transported both injured individuals to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.”
“During the preliminary investigation, officers learned that one of the suspects attempted to rob the victim, San Francisco 49ers player Richie Piercell. During the robbery, a physical altercation occurred, and both the suspect and the victim were injured. The suspect is currently in custody and awaiting charges. All information is preliminary and more information will be provided as it becomes available. A media briefing will be held tonight at San Francisco General Hospital.

Mayor London Breed speaks with other officials after Piercedale shooting
Mayor London Breed called the shooting a “horrific and rare incident in Union Square.”
Breed called the incident a “setback” for a district that had seen crime rates drop by 2024.
“When something like this happens, the data sometimes goes out the window,” Breed was quoted as saying by the Chronicle.
San Francisco has been plagued by shootings for years, though Breed boasted in April that violent crime was down 14% compared to the same period in 2023. Specifically, gun violence fell 38% in the first quarter of 2024, according to City Hall.
Violent crime in San Francisco has increased dramatically during the pandemic, with 56 and 48 homicides in 2021 and 2020, respectively.
A Chronicle reporter saw five shell casings at the scene, where Piersle had reportedly been shopping.
A witness told The Chronicle that Piersle’s left arm was covered in blood.
“It was a very scary situation,” the witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Chronicle.
In fact, Pierstle was seen walking away after Saturday’s shooting.
A video shared by KTVU’s Zach Soss on X shows an injured Piercell being taken by emergency personnel to a waiting ambulance and placed on a stretcher. Piercell was filmed from across the street and moved slowly in the video. He did not appear to be in undue pain but was holding his chest.
KGO-TV’s Dion Lim reported that Pearsall was signing autographs at Cow Palace before heading downtown to Union Square to do some shopping. Lim’s sources said Pearsall was at a high-end designer store shortly before he was shot.

Pierschall was performing well in training camp before suffering a shoulder injury.
With starting receiver Brandon Aiyuk holding out until this week, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Piercell impressed coaches and teammates with his performance.
“I don’t like to give too much credit to rookies, but I like his game,” cornerback Isaac Yiadom said in early August, as quoted by the Associated Press. “I think he’s got some confidence, too. He’s got a fighting spirit, so he knows it. He knows he’s good. I just hope he keeps working at it. That’s what I like about him. He just goes for it. He just shuts up and goes for it.”
Coach Kyle Shannahan’s offense has been notoriously difficult for young players, especially receivers, but Pierstle seems to have mastered the scheme.
“I think I’ve come a long way since I’ve been here,” Pearsall said. “In the beginning, it was definitely a little hard. An offense like this is so complex and there’s so much going on. Trying to learn everything in one day is impossible. So I just keep telling myself over and over again how I can get better and improve and learn the playbook every day.”
