The pandemic interrupted the series, but the Revelation Award is back with the restoration of the partnership between novobanco and Fundação Serralves and new features for its 16th edition. “This stop has allowed us to rethink the format of the Award, taking into account the latest trends in this type of awards, introducing changes that will help its internationalization and better adapt to our reality,” the organization explains.
But what are the changes that these mark for the country’s most important photography award? “The winning artist will now be chosen directly by the artistic direction of the Serralves Museum – Philippe Vergne, director of the Serralves Museum, Inês Grosso, chief curator, and Ricardo Nicolau, curator and deputy director – taking into account the most innovative artists in Portugal and internationally, based on the portfolios of several young photographers highlighted by artists and scholars related to photography, and alternating between national and foreign names for each edition.”
The prize is divided into a monetary value and an exhibition in Serralves, where the artist will have the opportunity to present new works, with teams from novobanco and the Serralves Museum following the project from the beginning and providing support in planning, production and communication. The winner will also see a monographic publication of the work published, thus inaugurating a new series of books linked to the award. “This will contribute to the achievement of the goal of ‘novobanco Revelação’, which is to establish one of the most relevant artistic initiatives for young creators in the national and international artistic scene.”

According to the organization, the global contemporary art initiative was implemented with the aim of “discovering, recognizing and supporting a new generation of artists” working with photography, and confirming “Serralves’ mission to reveal Portuguese and international artists with the same prominence and visibility”.
