Like many of the Republican Party’s bad ideas (outlaw unions, end welfare programs, ban abortion, strip women of their voting and economic rights, etc.), this one got its start in the failed Reconstruction of the 1870s. White supremacists took over the federal government, and in the states, Black voters were routinely threatened with violence and imprisonment when they tried to vote.

We thought those days were over. But in August 2022, three months before he faced reelection, Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, once again adopted the New Federalist strategy of using official state power to intimidate Black voters.

DeSantis created a special police force to combat “voter fraud,” and they executed multiple arrest warrants against black voters who were told by state officials that they could vote even if they had felony convictions. They all thought they were eligible to vote, Obviously most. There was absolutely no attempt at voter fraud.
