The Fiji Rugby Union has regained admission to World Rugby.

Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru disclosed this in an interview yesterday, saying this was one of the factors he raised during discussions with Education Minister Aseri Ladrodro about the Deans rugby team.

“The good news is that we have been reinstated as a member of World Rugby. I received the news of our reinstated membership yesterday (Thursday),” Sokoulu said.

FRU was suspended from membership by World Rugby in May 2023 and lost its voting rights due to management issues such as illegal operations found in the FRU board.

This has led to World Rugby working with the Fiji Rugby Union, the Government of the Republic of Fiji and the Fiji Rugby National Team to develop a collaborative roadmap to ensure short-term stability, programme continuity and future participation in major events, while also addressing wider governance issues in the longer term.

On July 1, 2024, FRU adopted its Statutes and unanimously approved its new structure at an Extraordinary General Assembly held at the Novotel Lamy.

This is a crucial step taken by the interim board and all the major unions under the House of Rugby to return Fiji to the top decision-making bodies of world rugby.

FRU interim president Peter Mazey said: “We have had a very good meeting with World Rugby in Paris and we are awaiting official communication from World Rugby.”

Fiji Rugby’s new structure features the Fiji Rugby Union Charitable Trust as the overseeing body for its two main divisions, which include the Commercial Division and the Operations Division.

A new management company – Fiji Rugby Union Pty Ltd – will be established to take responsibility for the constitution, FRU board, chief executive officer and the running of the House of Rugby.

The other part is their 49% stake jointly held with Counter Ruck Pte Ltd, which owns the Drua franchise in Fiji.

FRU will next hold its annual general meeting.
