The Hunter Francois Library (HJFL) at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College will be celebrating National Library Week with a series of colourful events. The week-long celebrations will take place from April 8 to April 13, 2024, in alignment with libraries and information sectors across the island, in line with the global theme: “For a richer, more fulfilling life, read!”
The theme highlights the profound impact of libraries and reading on enriching lives, urging people to develop a habit of reading for its transformative potential in acquiring knowledge, broadening horizons and immersing themselves in rich literature.
HJFL’s event lineup includes the popular WORRRD Up Poetry Competition, a platform for students to express their creativity and literary talents. The semi-finals took place on March 27, with 14 poets vying for recognition, culminating in the finals on April 3, where Shyne Savory was crowned the 2024 WORRD UP Champion.
In addition to poetry readings, the week will feature a fascinating discussion with renowned authors McDonald Dixon and Chadia Mathurin (scheduled for Friday, April 12), and a meaningful community outreach project to improve the Anse la Raye Primary School library. On April 10, the Hunter J. François Library will officially hand over the newly developed Anse La Raye Primary School library to the principal, students and teachers. On Wednesday, April 17, members of the SALCC Debate Society will dissect the moot debate, “Libraries in St. Lucia are ancient relics, no longer essential in the digital age,” exploring the relevance of libraries in the digital age.

Monday, April 8: Official opening with a ceremony of thanksgiving recognizing the contributions of library and information workers.
Tuesday, April 9: National Library Workers Day, honoring professionals who work to connect people with knowledge and resources.
Wednesday, April 10: National Library Outreach Day, providing support and services to the community, including the official handover of the Anse La Raye Primary School library.
Thursday 11 April: Library Action Day, mobilising advocates to highlight the critical role of libraries in nation building, including panel discussions and a televised debate.
Friday, April 12: Relax with the Library event at the public library to promote community connection, and an author talk at HJFL.
Saturday, April 13: Storytime: A Day with Volunteer Readers at the public library, celebrating the magic of storytelling and literacy.
