Randy Arozarena is a people’s man.
Arozarena shocking Traded from the Rays to the Mariners earlier this week.
However, instead of heading straight to Seattle, Arozarena made a rare move and spent some final time with Rays fans, sitting in the stands for Friday night’s game between the Rays and the Reds at Tropicana Field.
Rays announcers Dwayne Staats and Brian Anderson marveled at the move.
“That’s Randy,” says commentator Anderson. Awful Announcing“Randy Arozarena and his family were in Stan — well, that was weird. You know, it was weird to see Zach Eflin in an Orioles uniform. That was just next level weird.”
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Stutz, the play-by-play announcer. “You know, we’ve been playing this game together for a few months now. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Anderson said what everyone was thinking: “Usually, Seattle would ask, ‘You’re on your way, right?'”
The announcers continued to marvel.
“How cool is that?” Anderson said.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this before,” Staats reiterated.
Anderson, who played for the Angels, Cleveland, Diamondbacks and Royals during his MLB career from 1993 to 2005, talked about how unsettling midseason trades can be.
“You can imagine the emotions he had when he found out,” he said.
“There wasn’t a lot of news at the time – there weren’t rumors circulating. We were stuck on the plane. We got off the plane and heard the news. It was unreal.”
The Rays traded Arozarena for outfielder Aidan Smith and pitcher Brody Hopkins.
Arozarena, the 2021 American League Rookie of the Year and 2023 All-Star, entered Saturday batting .211 this season with 15 homers, 37 RBIs and a .712 OPS.
