Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a “Strategic Partnership Treaty” after Pyongyang talks Russian state media reported on Wednesday (June 19).
Putin said earlier that the two countries had prepared a document that would “form the basis of relations between the two countries in the coming years”, but did not provide any details.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted journalists as saying, “Russia and North Korea signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty.”
The two leaders also exchanged gifts during the visit, with Kim Jong-un receiving a tea set and a Russian-made Aurus limousine, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said.
Ushakov did not reveal what gifts Putin received, but hinted that they were related to Putin’s image, “including busts.”
The Kremlin said on Monday the treaty would replace bilateral documents and declarations signed in 1961, 2000 and 2001.
Moscow’s relationship with Pyongyang has sparked concern in the West, which believes Russia has been purchasing and using North Korean weapons to launch a military offensive against Ukraine.
Kim Jong-un previously said that North Korea-Russia relations have reached a new height and Putin’s visit will strengthen the “warm friendship” between the two countries.
