Proposed cut in electricity tariffs by July 1 – Kanchana – Sri Lanka Mirror – Right to Information.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara revealed that a proposal has been made to reduce electricity prices by July 1, 2024.

Wijesekara said during today’s parliamentary session that more relief for household consumers is expected and the proposals will be approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).

The minister also explained that it has been proposed to reduce the electricity tariff by Rs 0.02 per unit for the first 30 units of electricity in the household category. Hence, the new tariff per unit of electricity in this category will be Rs 0.06.

It is expected that the price per unit of electricity for consumption between 31 and 60 units will be reduced by Rs 11, bringing the price per unit to Rs 09.

Meanwhile, for 60-90 units, the charges will be reduced to Rs 18. According to the minister, the current charge per unit in this category is Rs 30.

In addition, Wijesekara also disclosed that for electricity consumption between 90 and 180 units, the electricity tariff will be reduced by Rs20 per unit, bringing the electricity tariff per unit down to Rs30.

In addition, the minister said that the relevant proposal will be forwarded to the Public Utilities Commission tomorrow (07th) or Monday (10th) and is expected to be approved.
