Fisheries Minister Ahmed Khiyam said the president had prioritised the concerns of some in the fishing industry over the economic benefits of lane fishing.

The Cabinet decided to open swim-through fishing to the entire country at its meeting held on June 13 this year.

However, the government decided not to enforce the decision to open the swim lanes to fishing.

Minister Shyam posted on X today that the President has prioritised the difficulties and concerns of some stakeholders in the industry over the benefits that the government can derive from the inland fishery.

He said the government will always strive to shape the fishery industry in a way that is beneficial to fishermen and will elevate the fishery industry to a higher level to overcome the difficulties faced by the people, especially the fishermen’s families.

The President will meet with the Great Lakes Fishermen’s Union and all relevant stakeholders as soon as possible to further discuss the decision not to open inland channel fisheries in the country.
