My fellow Americans, over the past three and a half years, our country has made tremendous progress.
Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments to rebuild our country, lower prescription drug costs for seniors, and expand affordable health care coverage to more people than ever before. We’ve provided much-needed treatment to 1 million veterans who were exposed to toxic substances. We passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And we passed the most significant climate legislation in world history. America has never been more positioned to lead than it is today.
I know none of this would have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we have overcome a pandemic of unprecedented magnitude and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and preserved our democracy. We have revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. While I have always wanted to run for re-election, I have determined that it is in the best interests of our Party and our country that I step down and focus on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
I will elaborate on my decision to The Nation later this week.
Now, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all who worked so hard to get me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been a great partner in this effort. And I want to express my sincere gratitude to the American people for their trust and confidence in me.
I believe today what I have always believed: that if we work together, there is nothing America cannot do. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America.
