Kathmandu, July 29. The order for leaders to address the Maoist Centre Standing Committee meeting has ended.
The meeting will finalize the date of the central committee meeting after President Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s speech on Thursday. According to the leaders, no proposals will be made in this meeting and no decision will be taken on the leadership of the organization.
After leaving the government, the Maoists have been holding meetings. First, Prachanda called a meeting of officials and then a meeting of the standing committee. In the meeting that began on Friday, deputy general secretary Janardhan Sharma gave his opinion in writing on Saturday. Sharma’s proposal to hand over the leadership or contest the assembly elections has caused uproar.
But many leaders who spoke at the standing committee believed that there was no alternative to Prachanda. “Prachanda has shortcomings, he also has strengths, but many people think there is no one else who can replace him,” said a member of the standing committee. “Prachanda should be reformed, and the conclusion is that he should lead the reform” of the party.
The leaders said that Prachanda must leave the government while good governance and corruption control are done and it is wrong to question the leadership at this time. Some commented that DSG Sharma is only spice up the opposition.
Another leader said, “While the government is doing good work, the party has become weak and stagnant.”
In this process, the leaders said that it is necessary to unite like-minded people to form a front and strengthen organizational construction. The leaders stressed that Prachanda should also transform himself and govern the party under collective leadership.
“We have to go to the people and make the party self-reliant. This is not possible in the status quo,” said an official, “Everyone insists that plans and programmes should be made to change the situation.”
Prachanda has led the Maoists for three and a half decades. The Maoists emerged as the largest party in the first election after the peace process (the 2064 Constituent Assembly) and are currently ranked third. In the first Constituent Assembly, the Maoists received about 31 million votes, but in the last election, they received about 11 million votes.
In recent years, decisions made during the Mao era requiring a transformation of the party’s leadership have not been implemented.
A member of the standing committee said, “Prachanda must have felt the need to hand over the leadership to the Maoists, but nothing has been seen so far.”
Some argue that even after the leadership transfer, there is no alternative leader to unite the party. Instead, they say the focus should be on how to prepare a successor.
Prachanda is scheduled to respond on Thursday after hearing the views of the standing committee members.
Sources said Prachanda was not in favor of giving too many answers to DSG Sharma as most of the standing committee leaders supported him. But his dissatisfaction was evident from the way he framed the questions and raised them. He was ready to submit other matters in writing to the Centre.
