The city of Agde on the French Mediterranean coast has gained a notorious reputation, especially for the nearby tourist hub of Cap d’Agde. The nudist area of Cap d’Agde is home to 40,000 nudist tourists in high season, where nudity is mandatory. The city is also home to many swingers’ hangouts; couples from all over Europe come here to indulge their lust.
However, Agde is currently under suspicion for other reasons; the protagonists are the mayor Gilles Detor, a former Gaullist of the Republic, and Sofia Martinez, a well-known clairvoyant and healer in the town. Both are currently in custody and the investigation is ongoing. The judiciary suspects that the mayor embezzled about 300,000 euros from the city treasury to pay the salaries of Martinez and those around her. She is accused of fraud and manipulation.
The sound has changed
The clairvoyant claimed that she could contact the dead, who would then speak through her. The mayor first met Sofia Martinez about four years ago and asked her to establish contact with his father in the afterlife. The exercise was said to be successful: suddenly, the clairvoyant spoke in a deep male voice – it was her father’s voice.
The seances continued, and Detto received numerous calls from his father and other dead people. Most of the time, the “voices” called on the mayor to offer generous rewards for the services of mediums and clairvoyants. The city’s boss was obedient, funding vacations for Martinez and her extended family, hiring her husband into city government, and renovating her house. Local companies with ties to the mayor did the work for free, fearing they would lose future contracts with the mayor.
The incident spread throughout the city, and the police became suspicious, monitoring the protagonists’ phones for weeks, searching their offices, and eventually arresting both. During interrogation, the mayor claimed that she had paid the clairvoyant with her own money, but she admitted that the calls from the afterlife were made possible by her ventriloquism. In doing so, she manipulated the mayor, sometimes in person, but preferably over the phone.
“Crazy story”
The mayor’s lawyer, Jean Marc Darrigade, told the BBC that it was a “crazy story”. “It’s unbelievable, you have a politician, a mayor and a former councillor, who is very BroadCast Unitedligent. And then you find that a man like this can be manipulated by a woman. (…) She found a weakness in him and used it to her advantage. It took him a long time to accept that he had been framed,” the lawyer said.
“He made a mockery of our city,” said Fabienne Varesano, an aspiring local politician from the National Rally party, which also includes Marine Le Pen. She called on the mayor to resign. For now, however, De Tore and Martinez remain in custody to prevent possible repercussions for witnesses. Martinez is being held in solitary confinement after being accused of witchcraft and attacked by inmates at a women’s prison.
