Man jailed for 24 years for abusing father
On May 27, 2024, a mother contacted the Tafuna Police Station for help because her son was causing chaos at home and threatening his father with an axe.
According to police records, the mother called the police station for help when her son damaged a window of the Malelaeloa home on the evening of May 27.
When the police arrived at the scene of the incident, they only saw the accused, Mr Peter Fa’amoe, running behind their house and swearing at one of the boys.
The police then locked up the man and took him back to the police station for further investigation.
But the victim explained in an interview with the family father that tonight, the whole family was preparing the land, and his son was sleeping. When his son woke up and went to the kitchen, he heard his son shouting that there was no rice to eat.
The father explained that he walked up to his son and reprimanded him for being reckless, but the son walked into the living room and hit the window of the house, breaking it. Moreover, the son was holding an axe and saluted him.
The mother of the family also said that this happens frequently in their family with this son.
When police interviewed the suspect at the police station, he said he was unhappy because he had no rice to eat. He confirmed that he was wielding an axe to threaten his father and smashed the windows of the house.
The man was charged with two counts;
Count 1: Domestic Violence – a Class “C” Misdemeanor punishable by up to fifteen (15) days in jail or a $300 fine; or both.
Count 2: Damage to Property, II – a Class “A” misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison or a $1,000 fine; or both.
The defendant will be released on $1,000 bail while awaiting trial.
He got into an argument but he didn’t understand why
According to government records, on the morning of May 11, 2024, a police officer reported someone making noise near the Fagatogo Police Station. When police went to investigate the incident, they found the defendant, Mr. Tony Sione, sitting at the bus stop with five cans of beer in his hand.
When officers searched him, they found four more cans of beer in a plastic bag next to him.
The police took the man back to the police station for further investigation. He confirmed that he cursed loudly at the bus stop, but he didn’t understand why.
Sione also confirmed that he began drinking beer on May 10 and was not held until the following morning.
Sione is now charged with two counts:
Count 1: Causing a Public Disorder – a Class ‘B’ Misdemeanor punishable by six (6) months imprisonment or a $500 fine; or both.
Count 2: Drinking Beer Where Alcoholic Beverages Are Prohibited – a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by six (6) months imprisonment or a $500 fine; or both.
Samoan man charged in Australian crash that killed two
The Samoa Observer reports that a 25-year-old Samoan man, Fua Moananu, has been charged in connection with a car theft that occurred last week, which resulted in the deaths of two Samoan men.
On Thursday, Moanu appeared in a Victorian court in Australia to plead guilty. According to Australian media reports, Moanu currently faces multiple charges, including two charges of careless driving causing death and five charges of careless driving causing injury.
The horrific accident happened on the highway at Mildura in north-west Victoria last Tuesday morning.
According to preliminary investigations into the case, Moanu was said to have tried to overtake a car on the road but the bus veered backwards and hit a tree.
But Judge Patrick Southey said during the trial that the police investigation should continue.
It was also reported that all passengers on the bus, including the bus driver, were Samoan.
Moanu may be released while his trial continues, but his passport has been confiscated, he is banned from driving again and is prohibited from leaving Mildura.
The trial is scheduled to resume on December 4.
