Tadej Pogacar ended a chaotic day at the Giro d’Italia in familiar fashion on Tuesday, taking victory on stage 16 to extend his huge lead in the overall standings.

The Slovenian runner overcame heavy rain to stay away from his rivals at the summit finish in the Val Gardena ski resort, his fifth stage of this year’s race.

Pogacar, who is making his Giro debut, currently leads the standings by more than seven minutes and, barring something unfortunate in the coming days, looks set to arrive in Rome with a red rose on his back.

As he crossed the finish line, he raised his hands and counted his Giro stage wins.

Giulio Pellizzari was the last to break past Pogaca and took second place, while third-placed Dani Martinez overtook Geraint Thomas to move into second place in the overall standings.

Freezing rain in the South Tyrol mountains shortened the stage to 121 kilometers after a stand-off between organizers and riders over concerns about the weather.
