Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the concerned departments to expedite the implementation of the agreements and memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached with the Chinese government and companies, saying delay in implementation of the agreements would not be tolerated.
The Prime Minister, while chairing a review meeting on Pakistan-China cooperation at the Prime Minister’s Office, said China is a time-tested friend of Pakistan and is always ready to lend a helping hand whenever Pakistan needs it. He said Chinese leaders are determined to further expand investment in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the transfer of Chinese industries to Pakistan will help improve the overall economy of Pakistan, increase Pakistani exports and create new jobs. During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of various projects launched in cooperation with China.
The Prime Minister was informed that the Sukkur-Hyderabad Expressway will be built through public-private partnership. The plan to send 1,000 students for vocational training in modern agriculture at the government’s expense has been finalized.
The first batch of students will go to China to study at the beginning of this academic year, and the next batch of students will go to China Modern Agricultural University to study after learning Chinese in Pakistan.
Besides, the meeting was informed that plans to convert imported coal-fired power plants to local coal are also in the final stages.
Regarding business and investment opportunities in Pakistan, China organized a road show in Beijing and presented a comprehensive roadmap for the transfer of Chinese industries to Pakistan to the conference.
It was learned at the meeting that Chinese textile, medical and surgical equipment, plastic and leather industries will cooperate with Chinese companies to transfer industries to Pakistan. “78 Pakistani companies have initially expressed strong interest in cooperating to transfer Chinese industries to Pakistan,” it was learned at the meeting.
In this regard, the Board of Investment (BoI) submitted a comprehensive report on the progress and action plan. The Prime Minister appreciated the measures and recommendations taken by the Board of Investment in this regard. He directed the relevant departments and officials to provide various facilities for Pakistani companies to cooperate with Chinese companies.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the project team of Islamabad Tech Park and Ministry of Information Technology to complete the project within this calendar year instead of the scheduled completion date of June 2025.
The Prime Minister said while visiting the construction site of Islamabad Science and Technology Park, Pakistan’s largest, that the project was launched during the Pakistan Democratic Movement Party coalition government in 2022 and the contract was awarded to a South Korean company.
He said the project cost Rs 2,500 crore, of which $70 million (soft loan) was provided by the South Korean government.
“Soon after taking office, I issued instructions to continue the project 24 hours a day,” he said, adding that as Punjab chief minister, he had introduced a 24-hour work system in development projects.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction over the progress of the project and asked the project management to make best efforts to complete the project by September or October this year.
He said that after the project is completed, about 120 companies of different types will set up offices in the industrial park.
