On July 5, 2024, PICRC research and aquarium staff met with The Nature Conservancy, Micronesia and Polynesia in Palau staff in the Kedam Conference Room to strengthen partnerships and support each other’s work. During the meeting, staff from each of the two agencies outlined the different projects and initiatives they are working on.
Noah Adjoong, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy’s Micronesia and Polynesia Chapter, opened the conference by emphasizing the importance of regular exchanges between the two organizations. “These exchanges are essential for us to effectively support and complement each other as partners, and through our collaboration, we can better meet the research and conservation needs of communities across Palau,” he stressed in his opening remarks.
PICRC and TNC formalized their partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding in November 2023. Since then, the two sides have collaborated on a number of different projects, including coral reef monitoring, seagrass and invertebrate surveys on the west coast of Babeltuabu Island, climate-smart coral restoration, developing a coral restoration framework for Palau, and building PICRC’s coral restoration capacity.
PICRC Interim CEO Caryn Lkong Koshiba concluded the meeting by highlighting what both organizations have achieved through mutual collaboration and support. She also congratulated the hard work and dedication of staff from both organizations and encouraged continued efforts to strengthen the partnership between the two organizations.
