Pedro Pichardo met with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and invited him to a meeting, because it is important that the entity that governs the country meets not only with athletes, but also with coaches.
“I met him today, we greeted each other and he congratulated me. I tried to send a message to arrange a meeting with him. I don’t know if it’s possible, I don’t know how things work, but I sent a message to meet him,” he revealed to reporters.
The 31-year-old long jumper returned this Saturday to collect his medal at the Stade de France, where he won silver in the triple jump on Friday, after meeting the prime minister, who was visiting the Olympic Village, in the afternoon.
For Pichardo, it would be great if politicians could also “meet or talk to athletes.”
“They always meet with the coaches but never with the players. And it’s good to always hear from the players. What they need, what they want, how they are. Things are going well, aren’t they? Are they? This is very important and I hope to have a meeting with the entities and the people of our country to see if things have improved, not only for me but also for Sporting CP.”
A day earlier, after winning his second medal for Portugal, the Tokyo 2020 triple jump champion accused the government of focusing solely on football, denouncing the lack of support for the sport as one of the factors that made him consider ending his career.
“I still don’t know (if he will withdraw). Yesterday (Friday) they already told me there was another tournament. There was a Diamond League (stage). Yesterday the businessman spoke to me by phone and then came. Today to Aldea”, he revealed.
This Saturday, Pichardo was also more “deserving” of his silver medal after losing to the Spaniard Jordan Diaz by just two centimeters.
“I’ve accepted it. Things didn’t go well yesterday, I made a couple of mistakes. I’ve accepted it and I’m very happy with the silver medal. I think any Olympic medal is always a good feeling. I’ve got the gold at home to win one more for home, for Portugal, I’m very happy and obviously I would have loved to win but I’m still very happy,” he declared.
Pichardo also explained why he missed Friday’s press conference, clarifying that he had not been informed of it and that he was under anti-doping control when the press conference took place.
“I’ve done more than 20 doping tests in a row. I don’t know why. It’s always blood tests. They go home, they go after get off work, they go to training. They follow me everywhere. I’ve never had a doping problem, I’ve never tested positive, I don’t know what’s going on and I’ve complained through my manager as well.”
