The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said increased volcanic activity had been detected at the island’s active volcano, Mount Stromboli.

Only a few hundred people live on Stromboli, but countless tourists come to the island by boat from Italy or Sicily just to climb the 920-meter-high volcano.
