It is always said that Pedro Almodóvar was obsessed with actresses. Anyone who has admired Madrid’s “cinema” live or on film will not forget the representations of Carmen Moura, Marisa Paredes, Blanca Portillo, Victoria Abril and Rosy de Palma, not to mention Penelope Cruz. But his real muse was not the female body, but the silhouette of the city of Madrid.

This is, by the way, a story of reciprocated love, immortalized by the “Madrid, Chica Almodóvar” exhibition.

For curator Pedro Sánchez Castrejón, Almodóvar’s “Girl” can only be shown to the public at the Conde Duque Cultural Center, right in front of the façade where the filmmaker filmed Carmen Mora asking local authority employees who were cleaning the streets to spray water in Law of Desire (1987). If this night scene does immortalize the actress in an orange dress, suffocated by the heat of a Madrid summer, it is also true that we can see in it Pedro Almodóvar’s declaration of love for Madrid.

This exhibition explores Almodóvar’s relationship with the city by looking at 200 photographs from 23 of his films and his personal archive. It all began when he left his native village of Calzada de Calatrava in Castile-La Mancha at the age of 17. Pedro headed for the Spanish capital, convinced that his village was suppressing his unrest. He left behind the dreams of his father, who wanted his son to find a job in banking (Pedro banking?), and envisioned the glorious future he imagined for himself in “his” mythical Madrid.
