The usual “Discover Macau” section returns to the Paixão Cinemateca, with a selection of films shot in Macau, but this time from a female perspective. Thus, three films signed by local directors will be screened.
“Discovering Macau – From a Female Perspective” is the name of the regular film section in Cinemateca Paixão’s programming, which in August will feature three films by Macau directors.
The premiere will take place tomorrow, showing the 2019 film One to Ten, directed by Teng Kunhou.
The film’s story revolves around a ritual between three high school friends. The ritual involves crossing your fingers, closing your eyes, not saying a word, and not turning back. You are then asked to make a wish and walk through “ten sanctuaries in the dark” without fear, and your wish will come true. However, according to the film’s synopsis, a mysterious fourth girl changes the course of the simple teenage ritual.
Another film selected for the “Discover Macau” is the wine list “Gin, Sake, Margarita” produced by Peeko Wong in 2017. But this film is not about alcohol, but about the place of love and art in people’s lives.
According to the plot synopsis, the story revolves around three artists who meet in a bar one night to try to answer a simple question: why they create art. “While they know the answer won’t be easy, at least they’re not alone” in the process, the description states. The bar chosen for the film was Che Che, which was then located on Rua Tomás Vieira.
The third film released this month is “Natasha”, produced in 2022 by director Galileo Ma. The story revolves around a sex doll named Natasha, who is stolen from a brothel by a mysterious woman and decides to embark on a journey of complete difficulties. Together with the doll, “she has no choice but to complete the mission, at any cost.”
The films will be screened again on Sunday and then on various dates throughout the month until the 31st.
A classic worth revisiting
The Cinemateca Paixão program continues with the final screening of a Hong Kong classic on August 10. This is Tsui Hark’s 1980 film, The First Dangerous Encounter, considered “a masterpiece of the Hong Kong New Wave” that broke the shackles of 70s cinema. The exhibition is part of the first International Children’s Art Festival organized by the Cultural Institute.
