Paraguayan airline gets approval to operate domestic routes in Uruguay

It was explained that Paranair’s new service complies with Uruguay’s newly signed open skies agreement

Paraguayan airline Paranair has reached an understanding with Montevideo to add a stopover in Salto to some of its daily flights between the Uruguayan capital and Asuncion.
This was announced by Transportation Undersecretary Juan José Olaizola.

“We signed the letter of authorization requesting Paranair to start flights between Asuncion, Montevideo and Salto,” Olaizola explained.

He also stressed that this move is a milestone in the restart of domestic air connections in Uruguay. The Montevideo presidency website also states that the first Paranair flights “will be available in a month or two.”

According to Olaysola, the round-trip segment between Salto and Montevideo will become twice weekly, “This is the first time we have authorized a flight to one of the new terminals of the Uruguayan national international airport system, which is Salto, which will start twice weekly passenger and cargo flights to Montevideo.”

Olaizola also stressed that the new option gives Paraguayan and Uruguayan tourists the opportunity to visit the thermal areas of Salto and get to know the production systems of the coast and north of the country.

Paranair’s new routes are in line with Uruguay’s newly signed open skies agreement with Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. The official also noted that Uruguay is in the process of concluding a similar agreement with Brazil. “This initiative creates the possibility for other airlines to find business opportunities in the interior of Uruguay,” Olaizola argued. “Several airlines are currently negotiating to open routes to the binational airport in Rivera,” he also said.

Uruguay’s national system of international airports includes Carrasco (Montevideo), Punta del Este, Carmelo, Durazno, Paysandú, Salto, Merlo and Rivera.

Paranair’s fleet consists of three CRJ 200 twin-engine jets built in Canada by Bombardier Aerospace, with an average age of 24 years and seating for 50 passengers.

The aircraft has low noise emissions compared to most jet airliners. The company was founded on September 2, 2015 as Amaszonas Paraguay and changed its name to Paranair on October 15, 2018. Its main hub is Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asuncion.
