Kathmandu, August 14. Nepali Para Taekwondo athlete Palesha Gobardhan wins historic bronze medal at Paralympic Games. Palesha won bronze medal in women’s K44 57kg category at the Paris Paralympic Games in Paris, France.
In the bronze medal match, Palesha defeated Maria Misev of Serbia 15-8. In the history of Nepalese sports, Palesha set a record by becoming the first athlete to win an official medal at the Olympics.
Nepal has participated in the Paralympic Games since the 2004 Athens Games.
Earlier, in the first revival match, Palesha defeated French player Sophie Cavarzan 2-1 and was just one step away from the bronze medal.
Palesha defeated Venezuelan player Morales 31-0 in her first match today and advanced to the quarterfinals. But in the quarterfinals, Palesha lost to Brazilian player Silvana Mayara Fernandez 10-8. Despite taking an early lead against Fernandez, Palesha was defeated in the final moments.
Palesa had previously come close to a medal at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics by winning two events, but she lost to a Chinese competitor in the bronze medal match.
Palesham is participating in her second consecutive Paralympic Games, this time she made it to the Games after qualifying.
She won the gold medal at the Asian qualifiers for the Paralympics in Tai’an, China last March and was confirmed to compete in the Paris Paralympics. Palesha is the first Nepali athlete to compete in the Paralympics after passing the qualifying stage.
Palesha also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She won two events and made history. But she came so close to a medal when she lost to a Chinese athlete in the bronze medal match but was disqualified.
Likewise, Perasha won a historic bronze medal for Nepal at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
Palesha won a gold medal at the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games in Bahrain. The 20-year-old Palesha was a bronze medalist at the 4th Asian Para Taekwondo Championships held in Vietnam in 2018 and made history by winning two “matches” at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games in Japan. At that time, Palesha defeated American player Brianna Salinaro 10-0 and Serbian player Maria Misev 23-15 in the semi-finals to compete for the bronze medal with Chinese player Li Yuji. In the bronze medal match, Palesha lost 12-9 and eventually finished fifth. Palesha won the gold medal at the 2nd Kathmandu Kyorogi and Pumsey International Taekwondo Championships held in Kathmandu in 2018.
Palesha started practicing Taekwondo at the age of 10, while studying at the DAV School in Rakel, Java, and joined the national team for the disabled in 2016. After joining the national team, Palesha’s “first” international competition was the 3rd Asian Open Taekwondo for the Disabled held in Chuncheon, South Korea in 2017. She placed fifth in this regard.
Palaisha, a resident of Baghbazar 28 in Kathmandu, won fifth place in the World Para Taekwondo Championship held in London in 2017, fifth place in the 5th Asian Para Taekwondo Open in Jordan in 2019, and fifth place in the Tokyo Paralympic Test Tournament in 2019. Palaisha, who won ninth place in the 8th World Para Taekwondo Championship held in Turkey in 2019, also participated in the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix held in Saudi Arabia.
Palesha won nine different awards while in school, and her achievements in Taekwondo have won her 16 awards from different organizations at different times.
Lama Alone, who is considered a successful coach in the field of para-taekwondo in Nepal, has been training Palesha since 2018.
