Palau tourism to grow significantly by May 2024

Koror, Palau (June 24, 2024) – Palau’s tourism industry saw strong growth in May 2024, with 4,475 visitors. This was a 2% increase from April 2024 and a 78% increase compared to May 2023, according to the latest data released by the Palau Visitors Authority.

China remains the largest source country for inbound tourists, accounting for 33% of total inbound tourists. Taiwan is second with 21%, and the United States and Canada together account for 19%. The European market has a significant impact, accounting for 11% of inbound tourists, the highest proportion this year. Japanese tourists account for 8% of total tourists, which has declined since the peak in March. South Korea has the lowest number of monthly inbound tourists so far, accounting for only 1%, while other countries together account for 8%.

In May 2024, Palau operated seven air routes: five scheduled flights and two charter flights, in addition to private jets and sailboats. China Airlines topped the list, accounting for 32% of inbound passengers that month, followed by Cambodia Airlines at 31% and United Airlines at 27%. Batik Air, Air Nauru and Palau Pacific Mission Airlines together accounted for less than 7% of inbound passengers.

China Airlines mainly serves Taiwanese passengers, accounting for 66% of its arrivals, followed by European passengers, accounting for 16%. United Airlines mainly serves American/Canadian passengers, accounting for 62%, and Japanese passengers account for 18%.

The growth in the number of tourists marks a positive trend for Palau’s tourism industry, reflecting increased interest in the island nation and improved accessibility. The diverse mix of tourists from different regions underscores Palau’s appeal as a global tourist destination.
