ELAILAI, Palau – The Palau Red Cross held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 25, 2024, to open its new emergency relief supplies warehouse and training center.
The facility, funded by a grant from the Japanese government, will store disaster relief non-food items and provide space for training volunteers. Construction began in January 2022 and was completed in July.
The Red Cross said the warehouse will increase the Red Cross’s storage capacity for non-food items from 100 households to 300 households.
Palau Red Cross National Board President Jefferson Thomas and President Whipps praised the project during the ceremony. Japanese Ambassador Hiroyuki Orikasa also spoke, followed by Red Cross Executive Director Myron Sengebaugh.
The Palau Red Cross is an auxiliary organization of the government, focusing on disaster preparedness, mitigation and response. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent has 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and more than 16 million staff and volunteers worldwide.
